Kalmegh leaves have been shown to stimulate bile production significantly. Bile contains acids and enzymes that help break down and digest fat. Bile flow usually also promotes peristalsis, giving a slight laxative effect that may result in better bowel movement.

Kalmegh and High Blood Sugar

A clinical trial on humans in Thailand showed that Kalmegh leaves increase GLP-1 levels. GLP-1 is linked with (1) expanding β-cell (cells which produce insulin) mass (2) secretion of more insulin into the blood and (3) satiety. Satiety means ‘feeling full.’ Satiety leads to reduced caloric intake, and hence promotes weight loss.

Kalmegh and High Blood Pressure

Kalmegh leaves contain a compound called “14-deoxy-11,12-didehydroandrographolide” which has been shown to reduce heart rate and help with vasodilation. Vasodilation means ‘widening of arteries.’ Basic physics indicates that when your arteries become wider, your blood pressure drops.
